He proposed the idea of Uprecycling of Food Protein Waste.

The food industry generates enormous quantities of waste biomass that comprise mainly of organic residues. Food protein waste, as its most valuable component, is characterized with the high nutritional value, as well as their unique chemical, physical and biofunctional versatility. Currently, food protein waste is mostly discarded as an end-product of a linear economy, and the efficient uprecycling into a circular economy manner has become critical in the sustainable management of food waste biomass. Such an upgrading and reduction in the food protein waste would not only help to complete the SDG goal of “zero hunger,” by providing an alternative resource, but would also significantly improve the environmental footprint of agro & food production to mitigate climate change. Various concepts have been implemented for the valorization of proteins from a waste stream, such as microbe-assisted protein recovery, biotechnology assisted-membrane separation, enzymatic conversion, biorefinery processing, functional bio/nanomaterials fabrication, etc. This special edition will provide the cutting edge knowledge on the uprecycling of food protein waste, and aim to highlight and identify the most advanced strategies associated with the reintroduction of food protein waste into a circular economy.
