Dr.TomoyasuSugiyamagraduatedfromTohokuUniversityin1997,receivedanM.S.degreefromNaraInstituteofScienceandTechnologyin1999andobtainedaPh.D.degreefromOsakaUniversityin2003.AfterhispostdoctoraltrainingasaVisitingFellowattheNationalCancerInstitute/NationalInstitutesofHealth(USA)from2003to2007,heledhisowngroupatTsukubaUniversity(Japan)from2008to2013.HecontinuedhisresearchatNCI/NIHasaResearchFellowpriortojoiningShanghaiTechUniversityasanAssistantProfessorinAug2017

Preciseregulationofchromatindynamics(e.g.,heterochromatinassemblyandtranscriptionalgenesilencing)andRNAdegradationarecrucialforgenomestabilityandpropergeneexpressionpatternsineukaryotes.Dr.SugiyamahasmadeimportantcontributionstounderstandingthemechanismsbywhichconstitutiveandfacultativeheterochromatinassemblyaredirectedbyRNAinterference(RNAi)andaselectivemRNAdegradationpathway.However,thedetailedmechanismsarenotyetentirelyunderstood.
TheSugiyamagroupmainlyusesthefissionyeastSchizosaccharomycespombeasamodelsystemtostudy(1)howRNAprocessingfactorsregulatepropergeneexpressionand(2)howRNAprocessingfactorscontrolchromosomedynamicssuchasheterochromatinassemblyandchromosomesegregation.
Emergingevidenceindicatesthatdefectsinthesemechanismscauseseveraldiseasessuchascancer,diabetesandneurodegenerativedisorders.Therefore,uncoveringtheunderlyingmechanismsofRNA-mediatedregulationiscriticalforunderstandingdiseasesforwhichnewtherapeutictargetscouldleadtoalternativetreatments
