典型的光机械系统是由一个纳米光学腔和其中一个可运动的腔镜耦合构成(另一腔镜固定不动),当用一束激光驱动腔系统时,腔内来回反射的光产生的辐射压将使可动腔镜偏离其平衡位置。而腔镜的任意位移反过来将改变腔的长度,使得腔膜偏离其固有频率,因而改变循环光的强度。这样,在强辐射压的作用下,腔镜的运动和内腔场强度分布相互调制,使得这个构造简单的系统形成一个光与机械振子耦合的复合系统,称之为光机械系统。在该系统中,由于机械振子的运动和腔场相互调制,故产生丰富的非线性光学及量子光学效应。
