Battery electrolyte and interphases Functional electrolyte is the key to stabilizing reactive electrode materials (e.g., Li metal anode, high-voltage cathodes, etc.) and enabling high-energy-density, long-life batteries. The chemical nature and intricated interactions of electrolyte components control the structure and the composition of the electrode-electrolyte interphase. We aim to gain insights into the correlation between electrolyte formulation and battery electrochemical properties, and improve battery performance by designing functional electrolytes with high practical value (e.g., wide-temperature operation, fire-extinguishing, fast-charging, etc.). Solid-State Batteries Solid-state batteries are fascinating energy storage devices regarding intrinsic safety, long life, and high energy density. With superionic conductivity, solid-state electrolytes could offer comparable or even better performance compared to liquid electrolytes. We aim to develop efficient solid-solid interfacial layers or processing methods to boost charge transfer processes at the electrode-electrolyte junction and improve electrochemical stabilities of electrode & electrolyte materials. Metal-Air Batteries Metal-air batteries breathe in and out oxygen molecules for converting and storing electricity with theoretical energy density comparable to gasoline. Despite relatively simple architecture, they are a combination of battery, fuel cell and electrolyzer. We aim to design functional materials (electrode, electrolyte, etc.) to enhance the kinetics, the specific capacity and the energy efficiency of the cathode process, as well as the stability of metal anodes, for better metal-air batteries. Electrocatalysis Electrocatalysis is indispensable for efficient energy conversion processes, such as oxygen redox in fuel cell/electrolyzer, carbon dioxide reduction for carbon-neutral missions. Electrode geometric/electronic properties, reaction intermediates, and interfacial electrolyte phase are critical for reaction kinetics and selectivity. We aim to develop efficient electrocatalysts and electrolytes to improve performances of fuel cell and CO2 electrolyzer.
