Dr. Thomas Traill is director of the E. Cowles Andrus Cardiac Clinic at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. He is an expert in heart failure, heart valve disease, and inherited conditions that affect the heart such as Marfan syndrome. A professor of medicine at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Dr. Traill is also the associate director of the Osler Medical Housestaff Training Program for residents. Dr. Traill attended St. George’s Hospital Medical School in London, and took his medical degree at Oxford University. He pursued residencies in general medicine, cardiology and nephrology at Brompton Hospital, Guy’s Hospital, Royal Free Hampstead NHS Trust in London and the Nuffield Department of Medicine in Oxford. He completed a fellowship in pediatric cardiology at Brompton Hospital and then became a British-American research fellow in the Johns Hopkins Departments of Medicine and Pediatrics before joining the faculty. Dr. Traill researches structural and inherited heart diseases such as congenital heart disease, cardiomyopathy and valvular heart disease. He is a peer reviewer for seven medical journals, including British Heart Journal and Circulation. He has authored over 100 journal articles and book chapters and has given scores of invited lectures. Dr. Traill co-authored and edited the 23rd edition of Principles and Practice of Medicine, the 1996 update to Sir William Osler’s classic and still-popular medical education textbook, originally published in 1893.
