Dr. Robert Shochet is an associate professor of medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. His areas of clinical expertise include internal medicine and primary care. Dr. Shochet is a graduate of Brandeis University and earned his M.D. from the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He completed his residency at St. Vincent Hospital and performed a fellowship in consultation psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Shochet joined the full-time faculty in 2005 to become the founding director of the Colleges Advisory Program, a learning community of medical students and faculty devoted to clinical skills development and longitudinal career advising for students. Dr. Shochet is active in medical education research and was awarded an Osler Foundation Scholar Grant to study the impact of learning communities on students’ perceptions of the learning environment in medical school. As a general internist and educator, Dr. Shochet serves as course director for the first-year Clinical Foundations of Medicine course. He has served as a national leader for communication skills training in the health professions, as president of the American Academy for Communication in Healthcare, consultant and visiting professor to medical schools and health systems in the U.S., and host for national conferences on health communications research and medical school learning communities. He is chair of the Learning Communities Institute, which envisions learning communities and longitudinal mentoring relationships between students and faculty as an organizing principle for medical education.
