个人简介

Dr. Alan Richard Schwartz is a professor of medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. His areas of clinical expertise include pulmonary disease and critical care medicine. Dr. Schwartz directs the Johns Hopkins Sleep Disorders Center at Bayview Campus, the Sleep Medicine Fellowship Program and the Center for Interdisciplinary Sleep Research and Education with its Sleep Core Research Laboratory and Scoring Hub (Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical campus). He earned his M.D. from Johns Hopkins, completed his residency in internal medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Center and performed a fellowship in pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine at Johns Hopkins. Dr. Schwartz’s research interests include obesity and sleep apnea pathogenesis, nocturnal hypoxemia in COPD, and obesity and neural control in sleep-disordered breathing. He has served on the American Thoracic Society Program Committee and currently serves on the Planning Committee for the Sleep and Respiratory Neurobiology Assembly. He was recognized by the Department of Medicine with a Levine Excellence in Mentoring Award in 2011.

研究领域

Obesity and sleep apnea pathogenesis; Nocturnal hypoxemia in COPD; Obesity and neural control in sleep-disordered breathing

Dr. Schwartz has investigated mechanisms of sleep disordered breathing with a special emphasis on novel approaches to the diagnosis and management of this disorder. He has a longstanding record of piloting new methods to assess the severity of upper airway obstruction during sleep and treat sleep apnea. He also has extensive experience developing clinical and animal models of sleep-disordered breathing, focusing on both underlying pathogenic mechanisms and consequences of this disorder. Dr. Schwartz is an established investigator with a long track record in NIH- and industry-sponsored research studies. He has participated actively in the development of several novel diagnostic instruments and treatments for sleep apnea, including hypoglossal nerve stimulation and high-flow transtracheal and transnasal insufflation.
