Dr. Esteban Mezey is a professor of medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. His areas of clinical expertise include clinical gastroenterology, digestive diseases and elevated liver tests. He serves as chief of hepatology. Dr. Mezey earned his M.D. from Harvard Medical School. He completed his residency at St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital Center, where he also performed a fellowship in gastroenterology. His research interests include liver fibrosis. Dr. Mezey is a past president of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases. He received the organization’s Distinguished Service Award in 2002. He is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, the American Gastroenterological Association and the American Society for Clinical Investigation.

Liver fibrosis

As part of ongoing research, Dr. Mezey investigates the mechanisms of liver fibrosis, focusing on the inhibitory effects of fat-soluble vitamins on fibrosis. The studies are conducted in vitro with stellate cells and in vivo in experimental models of liver fibrosis.
