Dr. Mark Hughes is an assistant professor of medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and is a faculty member at the Palliative Care Program. His areas of clinical expertise include internal medicine and palliative care. Dr. Hughes received his undergraduate degree in philosophy from the University of Virginia. He earned his medical degree from SUNY at Stony Brook School of Medicine. He completed his residency at the University of Rochester and performed a fellowship in primary care research at Georgetown University, where he also completed a master’s degree in philosophy (bioethics). He joined the faculty of Johns Hopkins in 1997. His research interests include clinical and research ethics, clinical bioethics, ambulatory care, philosophy of medicine, and palliative care. Dr. Hughes serves as the co-chair of the Johns Hopkins Hospital Ethics Committee. Since 2002, he has been the director of a mandatory course on research ethics for all faculty principal investigators and fellows conducting human-subjects research in the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. He is co-developer and associate editor of the Physician Education and Assessment Center, a web-based curriculum utilized by medical residency programs across the nation. He is co-editor of the book Curriculum Development for Medical Education: A Six-Step Approach, now in its third edition. MD, SUNY at Stony Brook School of Medicine (1992)
