Dr. Charles Holmes is an associate professor of medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. His area of clinical expertise is infectious disease. Dr. Holmes earned his M.D. from the Wayne State University School of Medicine. He completed his residency and performed a fellowship in infectious diseases at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Holmes subsequently joined the faculty at Harvard Medical School. He then went on to serve in leadership positions in the Office of the U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator (OGAC) for the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) during both the Bush and Obama administrations (2008– 2012), where he was founding director of the Office of Research and Science and later chief medical officer and deputy U.S. global AIDS coordinator. He joined the faculty of the School of Medicine’s Division of Infectious Diseases in February 2015. Dr. Holmes is internationally recognized for his work on strategies to expand access to antiretroviral treatment and PMTCT services and the integration of evolving science into policy, and has served on numerous WHO and other advisory and guidelines committees. As director and CEO at the Centre for Infectious Disease Research, he directs an organization serving Zambians with innovative research, training and service delivery programs in HIV, tuberculosis, maternal-child health, childhood vaccines and other areas. His multidisciplinary research group is focused on large-scale strategies to improve information for public health decision-making and the development of more effective and efficient models of health care delivery.
