Dr. Giardiello was graduated from Tufts University School of Medicine and has a MBA from Johns Hopkins University. He received his internal medicine training at The University of Michigan and fellowship training in Gastroenterology at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. Presently, he is the Johns G. Rangos, Sr. Professor of Medicine, the program director for the gastrointestinal fellowship and directs the Johns Hopkins Colorectal Cancer Registry and Risk Assessment Clinic. He served for 9 years as the Director of the Division of Gastroenterology at Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Giardiello's clinical and research interests have focused on the study of cancer and cancer chemoprevention in the gastrointestinal tract. This has included the investigation of the genetic basis of familial colorectal cancer and the use of genetic testing in the hereditary forms of colorectal cancer. He has a continuing interest in the study of the genotypic phenotypic correlations in the polyposis syndromes which include familial adenomatous polyposis, juvenile polyposis and Peutz-Jeghers syndrome. The study of the genotypic-phenotypic correlations and biomarkers in the polyposis syndromes and hereditary colorectal cancer, the investigation of the genetic basis of familial colorectal cancer, and the use of genetic testing in the hereditary forms of colorectal cancer. Also, I conducted chemoprevention trials in hereditary colon cancer syndromes.
