Dr. Derek M. Fine is an associate professor of medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. His areas of clinical expertise include glomerular kidney disease, particularly lupus nephritis and other immune mediated kidney diseases, HIV-related kidney disease, scleroderma-related kidney disease, kidney biopsy, and rhabdomyolysis. Dr. Fine serves as the director of the Nephrology Fellowship Program. Dr. Fine earned his M.D. at Johns Hopkins. He completed his residency in internal medicine and his fellowship in nephrology at Johns Hopkins. His research interests include HIV-related kidney diseases and lupus nephritis. Over the past 17 years most of Dr. Fine's research has focused on optimizing renal outcomes in patients with kidney diseases, particularly those related to HIV and SLE. He have published many original research articles and reviews related to these areas. He also published broadly on the natural history and clinical outcomes of in HIV- infected individuals with kidney diseases in the era of highly active antiretroviral therapy. In addition, he has been a co-investigator on several NIH grants and PI on grants offered by the National Kidney Foundation Maryland Chapter. His areas of research focus include lupus, HIV, glomerular kidney diseases, and nephrology.
