研究领域

The focus of my research is on peripheral and central nervous system injury, repair, and regeneration. My laboratory has pioneered the monitoring and quantitative analysis of multi-channel somatosensory and motor evoked potentials, as well as action potential and compound evoked potential in order to assess the electrical integrity at various stages, both pre and post central and peripheral nerves injury. In addition, we use different imaging techniques to monitor anatomical changes in injured nerves, brain, and spinal cord architectures at various time points. These images allow us to identify spared fibers and track the extent of secondary injury, and determine the therapeutic benefit of the therapy. My translational research projects involves acute hypothermia treatment as well as chronic stem cell replacement therapy using oligodendrocyte precursor cells derived from human embryonic stem cells, human iPS cells, and direct conversion by transdifferentiation of human adult cells in rodent model. These stem cells are modified to induce overexpression of neurotrophic factors in order to modulate the lesion microenvironment and stimulate endogenous regenerative responses post spinal cord injury. A part of my laboratory is also investigating application of upconversion nanoparticles in conjunction with near infrared-LED illumination system for the neuromodulation applications both in vitro and in vivo. The goal is to develop a semi-invasive tool for stimulating / inhibiting, with spatio-temporal precision, neuropathways situated deep in the nervous system (spinal cord, motor cortex, vagus nerve, sciatic nerve, etc.) selectively. We are also exploring novel biodegradable polymers to replace viral transfection carriers. These biodegradable polymers could also construct an alternative drug delivery transporter, which will be used to limit the secondary sub-acute phase of contusive spinal cord injury. In addition, my lab is studying the adult central nervous system capabilities of adaptive changes enabling reorganization and plasticity in spared neuropathways following neuro-trauma. I am interested in neuroengineering and technological developments with clinical and translational applications.
