David Emslie was born in 1975 in Edinburgh, Scotland and lived there until the age of 17. In 1996 he received his B.Sc. (1st class Honours) degree in Chemistry from the University of Bristol (England), at which point he undertook a Ph.D. with Prof. Neil G. Connelly, also at the University of Bristol. The title of this Ph.D. thesis was "The Redox Chemistry of Rhodium(I) Pyrazolylborate and Related complexes". In February 2000, he started a postdoctoral fellowship with Prof. Warren E. Piers at the University of Calgary (Alberta, Canada), working on non-cyclopentadienyl scandium and yttrium organometallic chemistry (2000-2002) and borabenzene chemistry (2002-2003). In July 2003, he joined the Department of Chemistry at McMaster University (Ontario, Canada) as an Assistant Professor, and he was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor with tenure in 2009.

The Emslie group is a synthetic inorganic chemistry group, so the major focus (80-100%) of all projects is molecular synthesis. This includes the synthesis of new metal complexes (mostly extremely air sensitive chemistry) and unique new ligands (all of the pincer and ambiphilic ligands in our research are of our own design). Research in the Emslie group is focused in 3 areas: (1) Electropositive Metal Complexes of Extremely Rigid Pincer Ligands: Organometallic Reactivity and Alkane Complexes. (2) Group 13 Lewis Acid Appended Transition Metal Complexes: Metal-Ligand Bonding and Cooperative Catalysis. (3) New Organometallic Precursors and Reactivity for Metal ALD (Atomic Layer Deposition).
