研究领域
Organic chemistry
Our research is divided into the following areas:
Organocatalysis in Organic Synthesis
We are interested in developing new variations of different reactions and improved catalysts for performing them. In particular, much of our research has focused on phosphine mediated reactions. For example, we have developed the first example of a catalytic Mitsunobu reaction and investigated other reactions such as the Morita-Baylis-Hillman reaction, alkyne isomerization processes, the Wittig reaction, etc. Currently we are working to further optimize such processes and to develop new efficient tandem or cascade systems.

Natural Products Synthesis
The amide hydroxy-α-sanshool is responsible for the mild numbing sensation experienced when Sichuan (or Szechuan) peppercorns (huajiao) are eaten. It has been synthesized in six steps from simple commercially available starting materials using Wittig reactions as the key transformations for construction of the carbon skeleton. The penultimate synthetic intermediate was 2E,6Z,8E,10E-dodecatetraenoic acid, and its crystalline nature allowed it, and thus hydroxy-α-sanshool, to be purified to a very high level of stereochemical homogeneity.

This research was highlighted in many Hong Kong newspapers (Apple Daily, Headline Daily, Hong Kong Economic Times, Oriental Daily, Sing Tao, South China Morning Post, Wei Po, etc.), on major Chinese language website (sina.com, etc.), distributed by the China News Agency, and reported by the Asia Television Network.
Polymer-Supported Catalysts, Reagents and Ligands
Another area we have been intensively exploring is the development of polymeric ligands, reagents and catalysts and their use in organic syntheses. A broad array of soluble and insoluble polymers functionalized with amine, arsine, nitroxyl radical, phosphine, sulfide, sulfoxide and thiourea have been successfully synthesized and used in diverse applications. Simplified product purification and easy recovery and reuse of supported catalyst were allowed for these synthetic systems. Our current interests are focused on the development of rasta resin type polymers, bifunctional polymeric catalysts and other novel functional solid materials.
