He is also a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Cancer Nanomedicine and a Professor of Medical Biophysics, Biomedical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Sciences and Medical Science at the University of Toronto. He obtained his BSc in Chemistry from the Hangzhou University (now Zhejiang University) in 1988, MSc in Organic Chemistry from Hampton University in 1995, and PhD in Medicinal Chemistry from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1999, followed by a postdoctoral training in photodynamic therapy at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute. He joined the University of Pennsylvania in 2001 as an Assistant Professor of Radiology, rose to the rank of Associate Professor, then moved to Canada in 2006. His research program focuses on cancer nanomedicine, molecular imaging and photodynamic therapy, with emphasis on developing clinically translatable technologies to combat cancer. Dr. Zheng’s most significant contributions are his pioneering work on activatable photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy and his discovery of porphysome nanotechnology that popularized the “one-for-all” nanoparticle design principle along with the more conventional “all-in-one” design. Dr. Zheng is an experienced PI and research team leader, having led a NIH Unconventional Innovations Program (2003-2006), a Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) Nanomedicine Fabrication Center (2010-2014), a Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Nanomedicine Team Grant (2011-2016), a Terry Fox Research Institute (TFRI) New Frontiers Program Project Grant (2017-2022) and a CIHR Foundation Grant (2017-2024). Dr. Zheng is a Fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering (AMIBE), and an Associate Editor for the Bioconjugate Chemistry.
