Physical Organic Chemistry

Organic Photochemistry is a multidisciplinary field that draws upon quantum mechanics, kinetics, spectroscopy, synthesis, and organic structure determination. Our specific interest and approach is to combine physical and theoretical concepts with structure reactivity correlations to design new electron-transfer sensitizers. The electrochemical (cyclic voltammetry) and photophysical (fluorescence, phosphorescence, laser flash photolysis) characteristics of these new sensitizers are determined and are then tested for their utility to promote organic electron transfer reactions. We are also interested in more applied uses of these new materials to mineralize organic pollutants and as components in supramolecular systems designed to enhance charge separation which is a fundamental challenge in the construction of artificial photosynthetic devices.
