Research activities in my laboratory are concerned with the synthesis, characterization and reactivity of new transition-metal containing molecules relevant to catalysis and biomimetic chemistry. We are particularly interested in the chemistry of alkyl complexes of Mn, Fe, and Co, as these compounds occupy a unique place at the interface of traditional organometallic molecules that obey the 18-electron rule, and classical coordination complexes that tend to display various spin states. Such species have the potential to serve as more sustainable and environmentally benign catalysts than their heavy metal counterparts. Research in the laboratory is also focused on the chemistry of transition-metal compounds containing biologically relevant small molecules such as NO, CO, and H2S. We seek to model the active sites of various metalloenzymes for which these molecules serve as metabolites, signaling agents, or pathogens. Members of my laboratory are exposed to different aspects of inorganic and organometallic chemistry with a focus on the synthesis of new molecules and a mechanistic evaluation of their reactivity. We employ a variety of synthetic and spectroscopic techniques, many of which involve the manipulation of air-sensitive materials.
