个人简介

John Frederick is Provost and Vice-President for Academic Affairs at the University of Texas at San Antonio. A native of San Antonio, he earned an A.B. (1980) from Princeton and an A.M. (1982) and Ph.D. (1985) from Harvard, all in Chemistry. Following three-years as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Washington in Seattle, Dr. Frederick joined the Chemistry faculty of the University of Nevada, Reno in 1988, eventually serving as chair of the department (1999-2001) and director of the Chemical Physics program (1990-2001). While a faculty member at Nevada, Dr. Frederick's research interests in the area of computational molecular dynamics were featured in some 48 articles in the chemical physics literature. He has also received recognition for his teaching, receiving the Alan Bible Teaching Excellence Award from the College of Arts and Science in 1995, and the F. Donald Tibbits Distinguished Teacher Award from the University in 1996. From 1997 to 2004, he served first as Treasurer, then as President of the Telluride Science Research Center, a non-profit organization dedicated to facilitating scientific workshops in all areas of molecular science. Beginning in 2001, Dr. Frederick was appointed Executive Vice-President and Provost of the University of Nevada, Reno, and was responsible for the institution’s academic programs, strategic planning, master planning, and budget oversight. In 2007, he served as Senior Fellow with NASULGC, now APLU, the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities, where he helped launch the Science and Mathematics Teacher Imperative, a national campaign to promote science and mathematics teacher preparation. In February 2008, Dr. Frederick returned to San Antonio in his current position as Provost and Vice-President for Academic Affairs at UTSA. He is responsible for the academic mission of the University, including oversight of all its colleges, Graduate School, Faculty Support, Academic Accountability, Institutional Research, Information Technology, Libraries, Space Management, and many student and community related initiatives. As Provost, he is charged with ensuring the quality of academic programs offered; supervising the institutions’ strategic and master planning processes; supporting the recruitment of high-quality faculty; and, facilitating the growth and enhancement of the university. He plays a leading role in guiding the university towards the goal of becoming a premier research institution. During 2012-13, he also served as interim Vice-President for Research, responsible for providing administrative support for the university’s research programs and enhancing their growth. Dr. Frederick is married to Mimi Yu, the Associate Director of UTSA’s East Asia Institute, and has two teenage children.

研究领域
