Organic Chemistry

Research efforts that utilize the principles of synthetic organic and inorganic chemistry to prepare unique molecular entities are under scrutiny. This research has main three goals at the present time: (1) To prepare model systems that mimic biologically important processes; (2) To develop tandem or cascade reaction schemes that are green and useful for the preparation of these biologically important molecules by avoiding the use of solvents as a necessary part of the methodology; and (3) To understand the details of the mechanistic processes that lead through these reaction schemes to the biologically important product or precursor. Three areas of particular concern continue to hold interest. One explores the preparation of Salinosporamide A. The second area is exploring the development of a tandem process that will eventually be utilized to prepare chiral pyrrolizidine and indolizidine ring systems of interest The third area examines the mechanistic pathways that occur at the molecular level in the retrosynthetic schemes that will yield the molecular entities of interest. Synthetic chemistry is the basic research technique that underlies all of our efforts. It allows for the preparation of unusual and unique molecular architectures and thus we can use it to develop unique reaction methodologies and then to explore the mechanistic processes that are involved.
