David H. Farrar is the Provost and Vice President Academic at the University of British Columbia and is a Professor of Chemistry. Dr. Farrar came to UBC from the University of Toronto where he served as Vice Provost Students.
Dr. Farrar received his undergraduate and master’s degrees from the University of Toronto, and his doctorate from the University of Western Ontario. He has authored or co-authored over 80 technical papers, holds five patents, and has supervised over 25 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Dr. Farrar serves on several boards.
As Provost, Dr. Farrar provides support for the President as he guides the University and manages the senior executive. Dr. Farrar has responsibility for the academic mandate of UBC at its Vancouver campus, providing vision and leadership in planning, policy development and management of resources to achieve strategic goals, articulated in the UBC Strategic Plan.
The portfolio encompasses 12 Faculties and two Colleges, as well as academic support units such as the Library, Information Technology, Continuing Studies, Enrolment Services and units with responsibility for supporting teaching, learning and research.
Dr. Farrar notes that the future is framed by our vision statement contained in “Place and Promise: the UBC Plan”:
