Dr. Koenig’s broad research focus is to understand physiologic responses of the heart, vasculature, and end-organs to mechanical circulatory support (MCS) for the treatment of heart failure, and how it may lead to pathologic remodeling. Our specific research foci are development of MCS therapies to promote myocardial recovery; development of MCS control strategies, and elucidating mechanisms of cardiovascular remodeling to improve patient outcomes and restore quality of life. Dr. Koenig in collaboration with Dr. Slaughter have developed an Advanced Heart Failure Research (AHFR) program and Biomedical Engineering and Cardiothoracic Surgery (BECTS) team that conducts clinical, engineering and scientific research and development (R&D) to clinically translate new diagnostic tools and innovative therapies for advanced heart failure.
