Dr. Berezovski's lab focuses on several research areas: (1) Kinetic Capillary Electrophoresis (KCE) and the development of new methods for analysis of biomolecules and biomolecular interactions (Bioanalytical Chemistry); (2) the selection and application of nucleic acid and peptide aptamers in therapeutic and diagnostic purposes (Biopharmaceuticals & biosensors); (3) the biomarker discovery for cancer and immune cells (Biomarkers).
(1) Bioanalytical Chemistry — the analysis of biomolecules and their non-covalent interactions with Kinetic Capillary Electrophoresis and Mass Spectrometry;
(2) Biopharmaceuticals — the selection and application of DNA aptamers to proteins, live cells, bacteria and viruses for therapeutic and diagnostic purposes;
(3) Biosensors — the development of aptamer-based sensors for cancer cells and pathogens.
The Berezovski Research Group is a truly international (speaking ~12 different languages) and interdisciplinary team integrating chemistry and biology for better understanding molecular processes and mechanisms of cancer and immune diseases, finding new drugs and biomarkers, developing advanced analytical probes and methods.
The Berezovski lab has a stimulating training environment for undergraduate and graduate students. It is composed of researchers with diverse background and skills; some trained in bioanalytical chemistry, some in biochemistry and molecular biology. This multidisciplinary team-based training is an extremely powerful tool for the developing researchers. They are practicing in modern bioanalytical techniques with particular emphasis on analysis of proteins and nucleic acids. The training covers the fundamental theory and practical aspects of spectroscopic methods, capillary electrophoresis, HPLC, mass spectrometry, flow cytometry, PCR.
New biopharmaceuticals and biomarkers are developed directly by students. Students are also trained toward experimental procedure design, data analysis, preparation of SOPs and scientific articles, making reports and presentations, and project management.
Thereafter, the students are well prepared to work in the pharmaceutical and biotech sector, the federal government or in academia upon completion of their MSc or PhD degrees.
The Berezovski lab is also a member of BioMOLAR Network. The network includes a wide range of experts in the chemistry of biological macromolecules and applies different bioanalytical techniques and instruments
