Synthesis of Molecular Models of Next Generation Nuclear Fuels: Clean nuclear energy is a viable alternative to fossil-fuel based energy sources that are currently having a destructive effect on our planet. As the recent events at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant resulting from the powerful Tohoku earthquake and tsunami attest, traditional nuclear energy has safety and design drawbacks. Thorium-based nuclear energy promises to alleviate many of the problems associated with traditional mixed-oxide (MOX) fuel reactors used around the world. This project involves the generation of new molecular constructs that place Th and the UO2 fragment in close proximity. These new model systems will yield insight into the potential behavior and properties of Th-based nuclear fuels. High Oxidation State Metal-Element Multiple Bonds: Metal-element multiple bonds are critical intermediates in numerous catalytic processes, and are often located in the active site of many enzymes that are involved in metabolic pathways. Two projects in this area will be targeted towards 1) the generation of high oxidation state oxo and nitrido ligands on iron for use in catalytic C-H bond activation, and 2) the generation of high oxidation state group six phosphinidene species for catalytic P=C bond metathesis reactions.
