Nearly 2/3 of world population is at the risk of malaria. Half billion malaria cases occur every year and more than one million people died of malaria annually. Malaria is transmitted by anopheline mosquitoes. Passage of the malaria parasites through the vector mosquitoes is an obligatory step for malaria transmission. The process begins when the mosquito ingests a blood meal, and it ends ten days later when malaria sporozoites invade the mosquito's salivary glands. During this time, there are numerous critical interactions between the parasite and mosquito. The parasite locates and invades specific cell types, undergoes radical structural metamorphoses, and carries out global switches in gene expression, while avoiding destruction by the mosquito immune system. The long-term goal of our research is developing a novel vector-based strategy to prevent malaria transmission by interfering with parasite-mosquito interactions using genomics approaches. The short-term goal of our research is to identify the genes causing malaria resistance in Anopheles mosquitoes. Bioinformatics, molecular biology and field research are three components in our lab.
