Our laboratory engages the interface of synthetic organic/medicinal chemistry and chemical biology to develop natural product inspired chemical probes for unexploited targets implicated in pathogenesis. Our research interests include:
Modulation of Epigenetic Reader Proteins: Epigenetic reader proteins (ERPs) are key regulators of gene expression and thus imperative to disease initiation and progression. To date, few ERPs have succumbed to small molecule modulation, leaving important biochemical questions unanswered and limiting evidence for the therapeutic potential of this protein class. Therefore, we aim to identify and design modulators that 1) exhibit selectivity between ERP families and 2) manifest activity against unexploited ERPs in order to elucidate biological consequences associated with selective disruption.
Exploitation of Novel Antibacterial Targets: The continued rise of antibiotic resistance paired with the decline in newly approved antibiotics for existing targets has reinvigorated the desire to exploit new antibacterial strategies. Our approach aims to identify both natural product and small molecule modulators of underexplored targets.
Scaleable Synthesis of 3-D BioCores: This research endeavor aims to utilize creative synthetic methodology, both existing and contemporary, to provide access to three dimensional natural product scaffolds; therefore simultaneously contributing to the expansion of screening libraries and advancement of synthetic methodology.
