Dr. Shamoo is a professor and former chairman of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology with a secondary appointment to the Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine. He served on Defense Health Board (DHB) as Bush and Obama appointee, and currently serving a four year term appointment by Secretary Hagel as the chair of the Medical Ethics Subcommittee of the DHB. Dr. Shamoo is an Associate Fellow at the Institute for Policy Studies and senior analyst for Foreign Policy in Focus. In 1988, he founded and is the Editor-in-Chief of the journal, Accountability in Research. He also served in many other boards. Writing often in newspapers and websites on ethics and public policy, Dr. Shamoo’s commentaries have frequently appeared in The Baltimore Sun and in Foreign Policy in Focus among many others. He is a blogger for the Huffington Post. Dr. Shamoo has been cited and has appeared many times in the media. Shamoo was a Clinton appointee member of the National Human Research Protections Advisory Committee (NHRPAC). He has chaired twelve international conferences on ethical issues and testified before Congressional Committees and the National Bioethics Advisory Commission. Since 1994, Shamoo has been teaching a graduate course on, "Responsible Conduct of Research". He chaired the Ethics and Regulatory Forum of the Association of Clinical Research Professionals (ACRP). In 1995, he co-founded the human rights organization, Citizens for Responsible Care and Research (CIRCARE). He served on 2006 on Maryland Governor O’Malley’s Task Force on Higher Education. Dr. Shamoo has lectured over 300 times worldwide on topics ranging from issues in ethics, science and public policy. He has held visiting professorships at notable institutions, including Sarah Lawrence College and the Institute for Political Studies in Paris, France and L'Aquila University, Italy. Dr. Shamoo has written over 300 articles and has authored, co-authored, or edited seventeen books, including his textbook , Responsible Conduct of Research (with David Resnik, 2003, 2009, and 2015); Ethics of the Use of Human Subjects in Research (with Felix Gyi, 2002). His most recent book (2012) is entitled: Equal Worth – When Humanity Will Have Peace. Dr. Shamoo has held full-time faculty appointments at NIH, University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry, Max-Planck Institute for Biophysics, Frankfort, West Germany, Mount Sinai School of Medicine of the City University of New York, and University of Louisville.
