Dr. Suki’s current research involves evaluating the effects of variability in mechanical stretch on cell function. Specifically, mechanotransduction in the laboratory is always studied using sinusoidal stretching. However, in the body, cells are never exposed to strictly monotonous mechanical perturbations. Variability itself appears to influence essential cell functions such as ATP production. His other fields of interest is the coupling between enzyme activity and mechanical forces in the extracellular matrix as well as applying statistical mechanical concepts to large biological networks.
