Organic Chemistry

The research interests of Dr. Clark focus on the recovery of sulfur from fossil fuels and chemistry relating to the use of sulfur in industry. A key aim of the research is to provide the Canadian sulfur industry with the basic knowledge required to answer day-to-day and long-term problems. Current projects include kinetic and thermodynamic study of the combustion of H2S, CO2, NH3 mixtures, the reaction of H2S, SO2, CS2 and COS over Al2O3 and TiO2 surfaces, the production of H2 and H2/CO mixtures from thermal treatment of H2S and H2S/CO2 and studies on aqueous H2S/CO2 chemistry. Catalytic routes for the conversion of ethane and small hydrocarbons to alkenes are also under investigation. Another area of interest is in the use of natural and synthetic clays for the synthesis of organosulfur compounds and for the removal of organosulfur compounds from petroleum and its products. Work is also underway to understand the influence of the high temperature chemistry of the H2S/CO2/NH3 system in connection with the composition of pre-biotic earth atmospheres.
