Synthesis and advanced characterization of phosphaorganic and organometallic pi-conjugated materials, polymers and their associated model compounds.
The chemistry involved is multidisciplinary uniting organic, inorganic and polymeric objectives and techniques. This field of research is centred around modern materials science; development of novel 'smart' materials is a major goal. Our research mainly focuses on the synthesis of materials suitable for applications in organic electronics, such as Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLEDs), Organic Field Effect Transistors (OFETs), Organic Photovoltaic Cells (OPVs) or supramolecular switches.
In addition to our work on organic electronics we are also interested in low-coordinate phosphorus ligands. Phosphorus, as part of a multiple bond, exhibits relatively poor sigma-donor character but displays a much stronger pi-accepting capacity compared to ‘regular' phosphanes. Corresponding transition metal complexes exhibit unique properties that can be utilized in catalysis.
Current research projects fall into one of these three main topics:
Polymers and molecular materials based on phosphaorganic oligothiophenes
Molecular self-assembly through coordinative bonds for the synthesis of metal-rich supramolecules and polymers
Design and synthesis of novel sp2-hybridized phosphorus ligands for catalysis
