Dr. David Mastropietro received his B.S. in Pharmacy from Massachusetts College of Pharmacy in 1999 before furthering his studies of Pharmaceutics at Purdue University for an additional year. He then began practicing pharmacy as a staff pharmacist for Walgreens in Memphis Tennessee for about one year. David then accepted a pharmacy manager position with Wal-Mart back in his home state of Connecticut. While in Connecticut, he worked as a clinical pharmacist for Waterbury Hospital that allowed him to work in a decentralized practice where he participated in patient rounds and provided clinical expertise to the healthcare team. He also served as a research assistant intern for Biogen-Idec in Cambridge Massachusetts. With over 15 years of clinical pharmacy experience, David furthered his graduate education at NSU by completing a PhD degree in Pharmaceutics in 2014. His dissertation work was focused on developing and evaluating abuse-deterrent technologies that can potentially prevent recreational abuse of prescription medications by injection and snorting. David’s research activities have so far led to 6 provisional patent applications, 17 peer-reviewed journal publications, 22 poster and podium presentations, 3 grants and 2 book chapters. While pursuing PhD, he also served as a teaching assistant and guest lecturer in several courses including Pharmacy Compounding, Pharmaceutics, Pharmacokinetics, and Patient Care Management. Dr. Mastropietro is currently an Assistant Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Nova Southeastern University, and an active member of Phi Delta Chi, Rho Chi, Phi Lambda Sigma, American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, and the American Pharmacist Association.

My main areas of interest have been related to prescription drug abuse and working on developing unique dosage forms resistant to multiple forms of misuse and tampering. In addition to research regarding abuse-deterrent formulations (tamper-resistant pharmaceutical dosage forms), I am also interested in other oral drug delivery technologies including gastric retention and controlled released platforms. More recently, my research interests have begun to focus on Pharmacy Compounding and classroom/laboratory instructional methodologies using technology to enhance the teaching and learning environment.
