She received her Ph.D. from the University of Cincinnati in 1992 under the guidance of Dr. Michael Behbehani (Dept. Physiology). She uses a wide variety of techniques from molecular to behavioral to describe how pain alters brain activity and synaptic plasticity. The goal of this work is to elucidate the mechanisms whereby age, sex and early life experience alter opioidergic circuits within the CNS. She has received numerous research grants from the National Institutes of Health to support her work. Dr. Murphy is also on the editorial board of several journals, reviews grants regularly for NIH and NSF, and is the Associate Director of the Neuroscience Institute.
