Dr. Fiedler is the Florida Institute of Technology Associate Vice President for Research - Federal Government Relations & Partnerships. Prior to his administrative appointment, Fiedler's research focused on genome biology and annotation. The sequencing of the human and now numerous other genomes has launched a revolution in the way biological research is conducted, ushering in an era of data-driven hypotheses. This novel approach complements but does not replace traditional laboratory experiments which must be performed to validate leads obtained from large-scale studies. Dr. Fiedler's primary area of research interest is in genome biology, and specifically using computational approaches to annotate genome sequences. Programming using accessible scripting languages such as perl allows biologists the ability to rapidly handle massive datasets, discovering novel genes in sequenced genomes.
Dr. Fiedler is currently serving Florida Institute of Technology in the Office of Research focused on government relations and supporting faculty efforts to procure external funding, as well as coordinating the Biological Sciences Seminar & Dissertation courses (BIO 5990 & 5991).
