EMPLOYMENT 2010-Present University of Florida Materials Science and Engineering Assistant Professor ACADEMIC BACKGROUND 2009-2010 Northwestern University, Evanston, IL Biomedical Engineering Department Post-doctoral Associate 2002-2009 Northwestern University, Evanston, IL The Interdepartmental Biological Sciences (IBiS) Program Ph.D. degree received 5/2009 2000-2002 California State University Northridge, Northridge, CA Masters of Science in Cell and Molecular Biology (with Distinction) 1999-2000 California State University Northridge, Northridge, CA Bachelor of Arts in Biology 1991-1995 Howard University Washington, DC RESEARCH EXPERIENCE 2010-Present University of Florida – Principal Investigator Research Interest: Biomaterials, Cell-material interaction, Cardiovascular disease, vascular and orthopedic tissue engineering, stem cell engineering. The Allen Research group conducts research on biomaterials, cell-material interactions, and stem cell differentiation. The focus of our work is on developing strategies to control adult stem cell differentiation for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. The goal is to better understand the multiple physiological signals and interactions that elicit molecular events governing stem cell differentiation. These molecular events, include substrate properties, mechanical cues, soluble factors, alternative growth conditions, and cell-cell communication ultimately control stem cell fate and are the target areas of our research. 2009-2010 Northwestern University – Post-doctoral Associate Advanced Nanocomposites for Bone Regeneration Advisor: Dr. Guillermo Ameer The overall objective of the work is to develop and characterize novel drug-eluting biodegradable nanocomposites that can guide or mediate new bone formation.
