Her areas for instruction include organic chemistry, biochemistry, and marine biological science. Her research area is microbial chemistry and chemical ecology. Prior to joining CSUSM in 1995, she was a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of California San Diego, Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

Investigated antibiosis in microbial isolates from an estuary in Southern California and a mangrove in Belize. Purified and identified many known antibiotics and several novel antibiotic and anti- inflammatory compounds.
