Dr. Brooks earned his Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Microbiology from the University of Victoria in Canada where his thesis work focused on the structures of carbohydrate-specific germline antibodies. His post-doctoral research was conducted at the University of Alberta, Canada in the field of membrane protein structural biology. He joined the chemistry faculty at Fresno State in 2013
