Professor Phil Hampton received his B.A. in Chemistry from St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minnesota, and his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from Stanford University, Stanford, CA. After completing his graduate studies, he held a two-year postdoctoral position at California Institute of Technology. He started his academic career as an assistant professor (1991 – 1997) in the Chemistry Department at the University of New Mexico and was promoted to associate professor (1997 – 2001). In 2001, he accepted the opportunity to be a founding faculty member of CSU Channel Islands (CI, 2001) and worked with twelve other founding faculty members to plan for the opening of CI as a campus in Fall 2002. He was promoted to full professor in 2002. He maintains an active research program with CI undergraduate students. His research focuses on organic synthesis, specifically the synthesis of water-soluble analogues of curcumin as potential inhibitors of beta-secretase, an enzyme involved in Alzheimer’s disease, and inhibitors of tubulin polymerization. In addition to this project, he engages student researchers in developing new laboratory experiments for the organic chemistry teaching labs that minimize chemical waste and utilize environmentally benign (“green”) reagents and sustainable processes. One of his other research interests involves making CI instrumentation remotely operable by regional community colleges and private universities, with the goal of enhancing their teaching of chemistry courses.
He has served in a number of administrative roles at CI, including being the Chair of the Liberal Studies major (2002 – 2004), Interim Director of Faculty Development (2004 – 2005), Chair of Chemistry (2005 – 2007), Special Consultant to the Vice-President for Student Affairs (2006), Director of CI’s National Science Foundation funded Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation program (2008 – 2010), and Director of CI’s Department of Education CCRA Hispanic Service Institution-Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics grant (HSI-STEM, sub-contract with Oxnard College, 2008-2011).
