Darcy D. Marciniuk, MD, FRCPC, FCCP is a Professor of Medicine, Respirology, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, and Associate Vice-President Research [Acting] at the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, SK, Canada. He is also the Medical Director of the LiveWell COPD Chronic Disease Management Program in the Saskatoon Health Region. Dr. Marciniuk received his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Saskatchewan in 1984 and underwent specialty training in internal medicine and respiratory medicine at the University of Western Ontario and at the University of Manitoba. He undertook research training at the University of Manitoba under the mentorship of Drs. Magdy Younes and Steven Mink. Upon completing his research training, Dr. Marciniuk returned to Saskatoon where he assumed his current faculty position with the University of Saskatchewan. His interests include COPD, clinical physiology, pulmonary rehabilitation and chronic disease management. Dr. Marciniuk is recognized internationally as an expert and leader in his field, with more than 285 invited national and international presentations. He has published more than 140 peer-reviewed publications, chapters, and reviews. Dr. Marciniuk is a past President of CHEST (2012-2013), and a former trustee of the Chest Foundation (2007-2014). He served as a founding Steering Committee member of Canada’s National Lung Health Framework (2007-2011), Chair of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Respirology Examination Board (2004-2007), and President of the Canadian Thoracic Society (CTS) (2006-2007). Dr. Marciniuk was the lead author of the three most recent COPD clinical practice guidelines published by the CTS, a panel member of international clinical practice guidelines in COPD, cardiopulmonary exercise testing and pulmonary rehabilitation, and was a co-author of the recently published joint CTS/CHEST clinical practice guideline on preventing acute exacerbations of COPD. Dr. Marciniuk has been bestowed with the Distinguished Scientist Honor Lecture (2011) and the Thomas L. Petty Master FCCP Memorial Honor Lecture (2015) by the American College of Chest Physicians, the Founder’s Award (2013) by the Canadian Lung Association, and the Distinguished Researcher Award (2013) by the College of Medicine, University of Saskatchewan.
