Physiological and moelcualr mechanisms of uptake, metabolism and toxicity of metals/metal-mixtures in aquatic animals Development and validation of approaches/tools for risk assessments of metals in the aquatic ecosystems Assessment of population level effects of industrial metal pollution in the Canadian sub-Arctic and high Arctic

The overall objective of my research program is to study the fundamental molecular and physiological mechanisms by which aquatic animals, primarily fish, take up and handle essential and non-essential trace metals from the environment. Anthropogenic activity has led to elevated concentrations of trace metals in many natural waters with adverse consequences for aquatic life. A comprehensive understanding of the physiology of metal uptake, homeostasis, toxicity and interplay with other environmental factors is required to develop approaches/tools for risk assessments of metals in the aquatic ecosystems. With that in mind, my goal is to investigate the complex relationships among water and food quality, metal speciation, uptake, metabolism, accumulation and toxicity in metal-exposed animals. While the starting point is always basic mechanistic physiology, my research uses tools of organismic physiology, biochemistry, cell and molecular biology, geochemistry, and modeling to address these issues.
