I am a geneticist by training. My research revolves around germ cell biology. In the lab, we use the nematode C.elegans as a research model system to understand the role of oocytes in aging, epigenetics and embryonic development.

The formation of viable gametes represents the first step towards the generation of a new organism. To ensure genome integrity and fertilizability, germ cells have to undergo dramatic remodeling of their genome and cytoplasm. With an older population and increasing maternal and paternal ages, Canadians are experiencing a dramatic rise in the frequency of miscarriages and genetic disorders, such as trisomies. Despite the well-established links between meiotic progression and chromosome abnormalities, the exact faulty mechanisms behind the deterioration in oocyte/sperm quality are not well understood at the molecular level. My laboratory utilizes C. elegans, a 1mm transparent worm, to study different aspects of germ cell differentiation. C. elegans has recently been shown to provide a reliable model system to study the process of reproductive aging in humans, demonstrating the applicability of this organism to model important aspects of human biology.
