Synthetic Main Group Chemistry
Research in the Martin group is focused on understanding new fundamental structure and bonding for boron. Carbon, borons neighbor is the most widely studied element while boron, in comparison is neglected. Despite this, boron is useful in a variety of areas and materials. Our research is focused on developing new bonding arrangements around the boron center and subsequently exploring the chemistry of these novel compounds. The desired compounds will have interesting properties and be examined for their utility in optoelectronics, Lewis acid mediated catalysis and small molecule activation reactions. Although our research is primarily focused on the p-block, organic and organometallic chemistry is a major component of our research.
Students in the group will become experts in air/moisture sensitive manipulations specifically in glove box and Schlenk techniques. The characterization methods students will be exposed to include Multinuclear NMR Spectroscopy (1H, 11B, 13C, 31P), X-Ray Crystallography, Mass Spectrometry, as well as FT-IR and UV-Vis Spectroscopy.
