Prof. Liu joined Northeastern University in 2012. Currently he is an associate professor with a joint appointment in the Departments of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering and Electrical & Computer Engineering. He received his Ph.D. degree in Applied Science and Technology from the University of California at Berkeley in 2009, and both his M.S. and B.S. degree in Physics from Nanjing University (Nanjing, China) in 2003 and 2000, respectively. Prof. Liu has authored and co-authored over 70 journal papers including Science, Nature, Nature Nanotechnology, Nature Communications, Advanced Materials, Physical Review Letters, Nano Letters, ACS Nano, with an H-index of 32 and total citations over 5000 (Google Scholar). His research findings were widely reported by international media including BBC News, CNN, TIME, NBC, New York Times, etc., as well as professional magazines such as Science, Nature, Nature Photonics, Nature Nanotechnology, Scientific American, National Geographic, Optics and Photonics News.
Prof. Liu was a recipient of NSF CAREER Award (2017), Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award (2016), SPIE DCS Rising Researcher Award (2016), 3M Non-Tenured Faculty Award (2016), Air Force Summer Faculty Fellowship (2015), and Chinese Government Award for Outstanding Students Abroad (2009). Currently he serves as an editorial board member for Scientific Reports, EPJ Applied Metamaterials and Nano Convergence.

The group led by Prof. Yongmin Liu is dedicated to interdisciplinary research that bridges engineering, optics, applied physics and nanoscience. Our research is a synergetic integration of fundamental science, nano material/structure design, and prototype device development. We are developing novel nano optical materials and devices for various applications including next-generation optical information processing, super-resolution imaging, efficient light harvesting and ultra-sensitive biomedical detection.
