Michael D. Naish is an Associate Professor of Mechanical & Materials Engineering and Electrical & Computer Engineering at the University of Western Ontario. He is currently serving as the Director of the Mechatronic Systems Engineering program at Western. He is also a Scientist at the Canadian Surgical Technologies and Advanced Robotics Institute (CSTAR), a collaborative research program of London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC), the Lawson Health Research Institute (LHRI) and the University of Western Ontario.
He received the B.Sc. degree in Computer Science and the B.E.Sc. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Western Ontario in 1996, the M.A.Sc. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of British Columbia in 1999, and the Ph.D. degree in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering from the University of Toronto, Canada in 2004. From 1994 to 1995, he was employed by General Motors to develop a computer-integrated testing system for diesel locomotives. In 2003, he became an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering at the University of Western Ontario, London, Canada and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2011. Dr. Naish was cross-appointed to the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in 2007. He is a member of the IEEE and ASME. Dr. Naish is licensed as a Professional Engineer in the province of Ontario.
Dr. Naish's research interests are in the areas of mechatronics, robotics, intelligent control, minimally-invasive surgery (MIS), vision and sensing systems.
