Heterogeneous catalysis and process engineering as applied to environmental and biochemical engineering problems.
Advanced oxidation processes for wastewater and air treatment
These processes use chemical and photochemical techniques for ambient temperature destruction of contaminants. Photocatalysis uses an ultraviolet light irradiated catalyst to degrade organic contaminants. A major emphasis in this work is the reactor engineering for photocatalysis and photolysis as an air pollution control technology. Aerosol formation during photochemical air treatment is a recent focus.
Infection and Pathogen Control
With industrial collaborators, we have been developing rapid detection methods for bacterial contamination of water, automated UV disinfection systems, ultrasonic disinfection, and novel antimicrobial materials for use in clinical applications.
Other projects in biochemical and environmental engineering
Some recent other projects include: mass transfer, mixing, and scale-up of non-Newtonian fermentation in disposable bioreactors; municipal solid waste diversion; and incinerator ash alternative uses.
