研究领域

The research activities of the Health Technology Safety Research Team are based in the Centre for Global eHealth Innovation at the Toronto General Hospital. This facility has state of the art usability labs that can be configured to replicate many different environments in which medical technology and health care-based information technology are used. Our research team members have backgrounds in clinical engineering, cognitive psychology and human factors engineering at the PhD and master’s levels, and our team supports students from the undergraduate level to PhD and master’s trainees. Our particular areas of focus include the usability and safety of medical devices and work processes in health care environments. We conduct literature reviews, ethnographic observational studies, simulation testing and field surveys in a wide variety of care environments. Special areas of interest include all aspects of medication safety, including smart infusion pumps, multiple concurrent infusions and parenteral chemotherapy ordering, preparation and delivery. The team is supported by major research funding and also undertakes studies for institutions and agencies. We are very involved in the training of health-care personnel in human factors methods and health technology safety, and we also study issues associated with providing safe and effective care in the home.
