Understanding the molecular mechanism of plant defense systems is critical in determining how plants defend themselves against various stresses, including pathogens and applying this knowledge to improve agricultural production and protect environment against possible negative impact from pesticides and fungicides. The long-term goal of my laboratory is to understand how plants transmit the intra- and inter-cellular signals of various environmental stresses including pathogen infection. To achieve this goal, we are using both forward and reverse genetics approaches to identifying novel components (genes/proteins) that are involved in plant immunity. One group of genes that we have identified are cyclic nucleotide-gated ion channels (CNGCs). They form a large gene family and affect multiple aspects of plant physiology such as pollen development, thermal sensing and immunity, likely through Ca2+ signaling. Using molecular, genetic and biochemical analyses, we are investigating the molecular basis of CNGCs. Other aspects we focus on are environmental effects on plant immunity. It has been known that environmental condition such as temperature and humidity significantly affect the activation of defense responses. This suggests that plants possess an elaborate signaling network to fine-tune the responses against multiple stresses. We investigate the signal crosstalk between abiotic and biotic stress signal transduction to understand the complexity of the signaling network and apply this knowledge for developing novel technology to protect plants and environment.
