My laboratory specializes in cellular microbiology and cell biology. We investigate different unexplored aspects of the interplay of macrophages, and epithelial cells with the intracellular pathogen Legionella pneumophila (Legionella). Legionella is pleomorphic and its different morphotypes carry different levels of virulence. The filamentous Legionella (FL) has been reported in patient samples since the first descriptions of this bacteria. However, its virulence has never been investigated. In my laboratory we study the cellular pathways subverted by FL to enter epithelial cells and how bacterial filamentous morphology contribute in the disruption of phagocytosis in macrophages. We are also interested in Legionella pneumophila’s mechanism for biofilm development and attachment to abiotic surfaces and cells. We are also interested in the study of the phagocytosis of asbestos. Fibers of asbestos deposit on lung airways and ultimately accumulate in the parietal pleura. Longer fibers cannot be cleared by macrophages and persist to induce inflammatory responses, leading to fibrosis and mesothelioma. The persistence of these fibers has been attributed to the inability of macrophages to engulf fibers, causing phagocytosis to stall at the phagocytic cup stage. My lab, is studying the phagocytosis of asbestos to cha
