Dr. Gerlai’s research has been focussing on the biological and genetic mechanisms of behaviour. He is known for his work on behavioural phenotyping of genetically engineered mice and more recently for the characterization of numerous aspects of the behaviour of zebrafish. For example, his paper on the pros and cons of gene targeting published in TINS in 1996 received over a thousand citations. He is also known for his work on Eph tyrosine kinase receptors and their roles in learning and memory. Dr. Gerlai’s current research at U of T concerns behavioral phenotyping and forward genetic (mutagenesis) and psychopharmacological approaches with zebrafish to study such questions as the mechanisms of alcohol abuse, social behaviour and of learning and memory.
