Seeds constitute the majority of global food intake worldwide. Seeds of most temperate plant species show different degrees of dormancy and integrate a variety of endogenous and environmental signals to coordinate development and germinate under favorable conditions. Understanding the timing of dormancy break and germination is important from an agronomical point of view. Reduced dormancy causes “pre-harvest sprouting” in several crop varieties, which results in downgrading of grains, while increased dormancy delays germination and results in a shorter growth season. We study the molecular mechanisms that regulate the transition from dormancy to germination and the role that hormones, nutrients and abiotic stresses play in these processes. We use functional genomics, molecular and genetic approaches to identify and characterize key players involved in the regulation of dormancy and germination. Currently, we are characterizing protein complexes identified by yeast-two-hybrid and Bimolecular Fluorescence Complementation (BiFC) assays important for the regulation of these processes. We are also studying transcriptional and post-translational regulation of master regulators of seed development and germination in response to abiotic stresses and hormones in the model plant Arabidopsis.
