Bacteria are critically important the recycling of organic matter in ecosystems and have evolved to disassemble a wide variety of organic molecules as sources of energy and carbon. This includes a broad range of xenobiotics compounds that are produced by anthropogenic activities, including pesticides and petroleum derivatives. The assembly of preexisting catabolic genes into new functional pathways involves numerous types of mobile genetics elements that are subject to horizontal gene transfer. My research involves the examination of the types and activity of catabolic and mobile elements in systems rich in bacteria, including soils, surface waters and the environments providing by plants inside their tissues and in rhizospheres. Studies on endophytic bacteria include those commonly found in urban trees and those dominant in soils naturally contaminated by near surface oil seeps. I also conduct research into the microbial partnerships of invasive plants such as garlic mustard and dog strangling vine.
